What ‘Ignite passion and discovery in every student’ Means to Me
Acquiring information and data has become easy in our society as technology allows us to get information on just about anything with a click of a button. Learning, however, is far different than simply acquiring information. As an educator, I must do more than provide students with facts. I need to provide them with the motivation and the tools to learn not only the what, but also the how and the why. If students can learn the tools to seek out what they want to know and have the motivation to do so, there is nothing that they can not attain.
A Teachable Moment
During my junior year of high school, I was sitting in my English class. I did a lot more listening in this class than I did participating. After class, one day, my teacher asked me to stay behind. My teacher encouraged me to participate in class more often, telling me that he felt that I had the ability to be a leader in the class and that by participating more often I would get more out of the class. This conversation changed my outlook on school from that day forward. I began to be a regular contributor in all of my classes and caused me to take control of my educational experience. This simple conversation from my English teacher set the path for where I am today.
