  • A Teachable Moment

For me, there are many teachable moments in life. However, my favorite moment would have to be working with a student who really disliked history and never found it any fun. This student spent many days in the beginning of the year with her head down on her desk. She had made her mind up that she wasn't going to like my class. Through many long chats trying to get to know her, and also lots of really stupid jokes, slowly this student started to participate in class discussions. This student knew I was not going to give up on her learning, and she ended up loving the class and the content. It ended up being her strongest grade that year.

  • What ‘Ignite passion and discovery in every student’ Means to Me

Ignite Passion and Discovery in Every Student to me means all of my students are engaged and find relevance in their studies. It means they are active participants in their own learning and have the necessary skills in life to be successful in whatever goals they set for themselves. I hope that in my class, their curiosity of history will guide their learning and encourage them to stay life-long learners.

  • What ‘Ignite passion and discovery in every student’ Means to Me

Ignite Passion and Discovery in Every Student means that my job is to explore each student's individual interests and find out what inspires him/her. Once I find that inspiration and passion, it is my job to create opportunities for that student to explore those passions.

  • A Teachable Moment

While interning in an elementary school, I worked with a student on the autism spectrum who frequently challenged me. It took a few sessions until I finally had the "ah-ha" moment that less really was more with this student. Instead of bombarding the student with verbal input, I limited my verbal output and used visual aids to assist in teaching my lessons. Almost instantly, the student's behavior changed!
