Paul Cook

  • A Teachable Moment

I have always been an avid reader, but I was never a fan of English class. It may seem like irony or karma that teaching English is my chosen profession. It may even seem a little cliche, but my love of literature began with my love of Shakespeare (Macbeth, Twelfth Night). Which led to my appreciation for British romantic poetry (Wordsworth, Byron, Keats). Then to literature of European imperialism (Swift, Kipling, Conrad, Coetzee). Now, every time I finish a book of my list of must reads, I am usually adding two more.

  • What ‘Ignite passion and discovery in every student’ Means to Me

For every student, a moment comes, which comes but rarely in life, when that student steps out from their old comforts to embrace new ideas, from their old habits of simply moving from class to class to a new world of self directed academic inquiry. When the age of school as a compulsory activity ends, the soul of an enlightened student, long suppressed by the rigid structure of education, finds utterance. Students must find their own intrinsic motivations for learning, and as a teacher, my job is to strive to provide opportunities to spark that interest. A student who is genuinely interested in learning is one that embiggens their understanding of their own place in society, and will ultimately find meaning in their own lives. This may seem a lofty goal, but I believe a cromulent one, and I hope I can offer all students the opportunity to find and pursue their passions. With thanks and apologies to Mr. Nehur and Mr. Springfield.
