Summer Freshman Academy

Seventy-four students completed Summer Freshman Academy on June 30, gaining exposure to high school level math, English, social studies, and science courses to ease their transition to Lakes.

In English and social studies, students read their required summer novel Peak by Roland Smith. They also worked on a document-based question (DBQ) about how Mt. Everest has impacted the culture of the Sherpa. Additionally, they developed their speaking and listening skills through team building activities, presentations, and improv, said teacher Randie-Lynn Reynolds.

The main focus of science class was to encourage students never to give up, said teacher Chris Blevins. Students developed grit and problem solving skills through various labs and activities, such as building mouse trap race cars. “We took the approach of experimental design to show them that science is all about failing and then iterating on your original designs / hypotheses,” Blevins said.

SFA students also had the opportunity to visit the Information and Learning Center for an orientation, and they participated in team building activities at Peacock Camp.
