  • What ‘Ignite passion and discovery in every student’ Means to Me

School is no longer a lecturer and 25 listeners. School is a student-directed process of learning about self, world, content, and other people. In even my first three years of teaching, I have clearly seen that students put forth their best effort, create work that is most meaningful, when they have a personal connection or passion for their book, project, or speech. Adolescence is all about self-growth to become an active, thoughtful person. Our mission statement reflects this student-centered philosophy.

  • A Teachable Moment

My middle school, especially my social studies teacher Ms. Welter, reacted to 9/11 with great care. Outside of class, we wrote letters to families and reflected on our personal reactions. Inside of class, Ms. Welter switched her curriculum to teach us all about the history of Afghanistan and Osama Bin Laden. She knew that the best way for us to enter into this tragedy was to be informed on the context of the conflict, not ignorant to its complexity. I have always tried to live and instill that value in contextual understanding to promote informed citizenry.
