Students are introduced to a huge variety of topics in social studies. It is my hope students come across something they are passionate about and want to pursue in the post-high school years and beyond. Every student should have the desire to learn and discover more about their passions by the time they are walking across the stage at graduation. A Teachable Moment When I was a sophomore at Illinois Wesleyan University, I had to take a research based seminar for studying history. The professor, Dr. Young, has been with the university for years and was incredibly intimidating at times. One of the most significant aspects of history we discussed was why we study history the way we do. Why do we automatically trust whatever the textbook or primary sources say? When Dr. Young asked that question to the class early on in the semester, no one really knew how to answer. That was definitely an eye opener for me because I had not really thought about questioning history all that much before this class. I had always stuck with what the sources said or my professors taught. The idea that we can question everything we know about history and then also question what could still be out there that we have not discovered yet, is, in my opinion, one of the greatest things about studying history. You never know what else there is to learn.
