Debra Lynn Rummel (Jahn) formerly of Spring Grove, IL, passed away peacefully at The Pillars Hospice House in Oakdale, MN on Sunday, August 20th, 2017 after her valiant fight with brain cancer. Her strong will to live, positive attitude, unwavering faith in God and the love and prayers of family, friends and many supporters, carried her through 13 months of treatment. She was 63 years old. Deb is survived by her husband Rob, her children Blair Rummel of Eagan, MN, Ben (Alicia) Rummel of Woodbury, MN, her grandchildren Holden and Hadley, her mother Delores Jahn of Spirit Lake, IA, brother Jon (Patricia) Jahn of Madison, WI, her sister Dona (Monte) Muller of Dodgeville, WI and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father John Russell Jahn.

Deb was born on September 20th, 1953 in Spirit Lake, IA. She moved with her family around the midwest during her childhood and attended Platteville High School graduating in 1971, and The University of Wisconsin- Platteville graduating in 1975 where she was active in gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, athletics, and music. In 1979 she attended Winona State University for graduate school where she met her husband Rob. After teaching high school in Dodgeville, WI and at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, she married Rob in 1982, and began her 29 year teaching career in Illinois. Deb taught health and physical education at Antioch High School (ACHS) in Antioch, where she was known as “Speedy.” Deb was dedicated to a life of fitness and wellness and was instrumental in the creation of a fitness and weight management program at ACHS, as well as the implementation of a variety of health and fitness-based classes. With her energy and enthusiasm for fitness, one could see her leading her classes in Jazzercise, step aerobics, and weight training workouts. She became the department chair in 2001 and worked to create many facility improvements at the school. Deb was a member of the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD), American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Because of her passion for teaching and dedication to health, Deb was voted by her colleagues as the NASPE teacher of the year in 2000. After retiring in 2011, Deb took her passion for teaching to the college level and was a professor at Carthage College where she worked with future teachers and instilled the same passion for the profession in them.

As a teacher, Deb taught thousands of students and was known by family and friends for her upbeat demeanor, optimism and strength. Outside of the classroom, Deb was involved with friends and the community. She was a member of the Community Church of Richmond where she served one year as the president and sang in the choir. She was a member of the PEO sisterhood where she worked with women to provide educational opportunities to those in the community. Deb pursued her passion of sewing and quilting, and even created her own company, The Mitten Company, where she made mittens from recycled wool sweaters. She never turned down an opportunity to go shopping or to a thrift store and loved finding a good deal. She was a great cook and never needed a recipe to whip up the perfect meal.

Deb loved to spend time with her family and was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She will be terribly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know her. Deb was the light of our lives and an inspiration to many. Her zest for life will live on through all of the amazing things she has done and people who love her.

A memorial service and celebration of life for Deb will be held in the auditorium at Antioch High School at 1133 Main Street in Antioch Illinois on Saturday, August 26th at 10:30am with a luncheon and fellowship to follow. Informal attire is acceptable. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PEO- Antioch Chapter, or to The Community Church of Richmond.
